As covered in a previous post, New Place Hotel served as the venue for Spencer’s sister's prom, the setting for one of his personal films projects during his time at Solent University, and holds many other personal memories too. In 1904, Mrs A. S. Franklyn commissioned the creation of New Place. Inheriting a magnificent early 17th-century mansion in Bristol, which was slated for demolition, Mrs Franklyn sought to build a new residence that would incorporate salvaged elements from the Bristol house. Additionally, she aimed to pay homage to her ancestral ties with William Shakespeare. Hence, she engaged the services of Sir Edwin Lutyens to design a new house, aptly named after the renowned New Place in Stratford-upon-Avon.
